Tamano gets 9th place on UP mock polls

Nacionalista Party (NP) senatorial candidate Atty. Adel Tamano has expressed his utmost gratitude towards the University of the Philippines (UP) community. This, after Tamano placed 9th at the recently concluded UP mock polls dubbed “Botong Isko 2010.”

The young lawyer and first Filipino-Muslim scholar-graduate of Harvard Law School managed to garner 1,407 votes, just 4 votes shy of the 8th placer and 27 votes shy of the 7th placer.

“I am extremely grateful for the UP community’s trust and confidence,” Tamano enthused.
“I used to dwell in the halls of UP back when I was still taking up my Masters and I was fortunate enough to have been awarded the Distinguished Alumni citation by UP’s National College of Public Administration and Governance. Now, with this show of strong support from UP students and the whole UP community as a whole, I cherish my award even more and I pledge to continue to become a role model for others. Mabuhay ang UP, mabuhay ang kabataang Pilipino,” Tamano shared.

Botong Isko 2010 aims to unite students and the whole UP community for a clean, transparent and honest elections. The mock polls also aims to find out which candidates are being favored by the Iskolar ng Bayan in the upcoming elections.

The son of the late Senator Mamintal Tamano, the youngest senatorial candidate is the former president of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. After his stint in UP, Tamano went on to become the first Filipino-Muslim scholar-graduate of Harvard Law School, a brilliant lawyer, a published author, a constitutional law professor and a spokesman for the Genuine Opposition.

Currently, he is gunning for a senatorial seat under the banner of the Nacionalista Party. Tamano is also the party’s spokesperson.
Among Tamano’s advocacies are youth, good governance, quality education and real, lasting peace in Mindanao.

Tamano urges PGMA to have the decency and leave task to successor

Following the Supreme Court’s recent ruling allowing President Gloria Arroyo to choose the next chief justice amid the legal issues raised against appointments during the election period, constitutional law professor and Nacionalista Party (NP) senatorial candidate Atty. Adel Tamano urged PGMA to leave the task to her successor.

“While I doubt she has any decency left, I sincerely hope that PGMA leaves the task of appointing the next Chief Justice to her successor,” Tamano said.

“The SC may have ruled in her and her minions’ favor this time but PGMA should remember that so many eyes are on her. People will continue to monitor her actions. Voters will remember what she will do,” Tamano warned.

The young lawyer-senatorial candidate also shared his sentiments with regard to the SC ruling.

“The law clearly states that the incumbent president cannot appoint anyone within the period of the constitutional ban. According to Art. VII, Section 15 of the Constitution, there is no exception for appointments in the judiciary. Hence, needless to say, I’m deeply disappointed with the ruling,” Tamano said.

“However, in my many years as a practising lawyer, this isn’t the first time that I got disappointed with the ruling of the court,” he added.

“However, what’s important now is the action that PGMA will take because of this development. If she really does not have any hidden agenda, then she will leave the task of appointing the next Chief Justice to her successor,” Tamano insisted.

In a landmark decision penned by Associate Justice Lucas Bersamin, the high courts said that the ban on midnight appointments does not cover the judiciary. Nine out of 15 justices reasoned that there is nothing under the law that prohibits PGMA from appointing the next CJ upon the retirement of Chief Justice Reynato Puno on May 17.
